Windows XP SP 3 Released

Comments

Oh, not again! When is Vista SP1 coming out?? Why do we even bother? Do you use Linux?
Vista - who cares? SP1 is out there too but the Windows 7 release has been brought forward to next year.

Me? I'm a long term Debian user...but I recommend Ubuntu as a well rounded and packaged alternative to the windows desktop.

The good news is that many in here in the UK are looking at Linux to get out of the upgrade cycle imposed by Microsoft.
[this is good]

SP3? Oh, the horror of it! I get new gadgets...such as the latest one being a webcam (I know...I'm WAAAYYYY behind everyone with that toy)...and just as I'm learning how to use something, a NEW technological do-dad comes along. I use Windows XP Professional SP2, and I find it to be wonderful. Hopefully we can upgrade for free. Any such luck?? Okay, now I have to look for my Valium. LOL. Have a great day, Bernie.

Oh, I meant to say this earlier: We're born in the same year! Hi "65!!!! *smile*

Don't worry about rushing for this...its a heads up to prepare for it. For businesses they should be putting it on test systems. The rest of us should wait a long time for others to iron the bugs out.

In the mean time just check the system requirements if you buy anything more. Since most of the world is on XP at Sp2 it is going to be a long long time before something forces an upgrade.

Sp3 is free and testers found it about 10% faster than SP2 on same systems. Microsoft have not said when they are going to push it out as an automatic update.

I can't believe 65? You're from 75 at most ;-)
I've been using Ubuntu for over a year now after switching from Mandrake/Mandriva. The Ubuntu community is great. Why are people in the UK just seem to be more with it? Linux is the way to go.
Ok Feb was the release candidate. Shame that was not made clearer.

The possibly maybe final real version was re-re-re-released yesterday.

Says it all. Sigghhhhhhhh.

Sadly its only a roll up of previous fixes - gone are the promises of a speed up. Yet, despite these assurances something really has been changed by Microsoft in this release because the update was pulled last week due to broken business applications.

Best advise is to wait for others to test this a lot more - review again in a few weeks. Put it on the least critical systems first!

Best of luck ;-)
Wooops....check this if you have an AMD box:

I downloaded and installed the SP3 version, and have had problems with my computer since. My mail system is whacked out, a keylogger is constantly being blocked when I activate a certain function on my Norton Internet Security 2008, my system runs slower, some pictures only come in as a big red X, and my tower is always grumbling with noise as it's doing SOMETHING. I don't like having this on my system. Do I just delete it from my Control Panel? Will it be replaced with SP2 if I do that? Is anyone else having the same types of problems?
Sounds like Norton is unwell. Can you update it?

Remove SP3 as follows:

Quoting windows secrets:

The repeating reboots caused by XP SP3 on non-Intel systems have been quelled, but there's still no rush to install the OS's last service pack.

Symantec's FAQ addresses concerns with both XP SP3 and Vista SP1, while Microsoft's Knowledge Base article avoids singling out AMD processors.
